Stage 1 - Emergence

About three-quarters of previously unknown human infectious diseases have their origins in animals. This image demonstrates the vast pig livestock population in China, which also happens to be the world's most populated nation. The dynamics of human interactions with animal populations (i.e. livestock and wildlife) are increasingly interconnected with human health. Organizations like the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Global Viral Forecasting Initiative (GVFI) seek to understand animal infectious diseases and their potential to cross into human populations.
